Never Underestimate the Power of Team Sports

Sports aren’t just about being the strongest or the fastest person you know. That’s an added bonus and definitely an advantage, but there’s so much more to them. These amazing activities can help build teamwork and bloom friendships all while improving your overall health. When playing a sport, there is one common goal that everyone on the team is reaching for. To achieve this, everyone needs to be on the same page, working together, collaborating, everyone giving 110%. This drive and motivation naturally incline us as humans to turn to others with the same skill set to get the job done.

Team sports aren’t just for people who want to stay fit or get a scholarship to the school of their dreams either. If you start with a common goal such as winning an important game or going to nationals, teamwork already starts to show itself. Let’s say that all of the players or teammates have gone through the same thing, like all surviving cancer, bonding becomes easier when everyone has felt the same thing at one point in their life. This silent understanding, hand in hand with the existence of a common goal, guarantees a deeper connection, therefore better chemistry while playing that sport.

Now, once a couple friends have been made, there are other people who have the same interests as you. There are people you can call to hang out, go to a movie, even practice your sport together.

There are people who understand some things about your sport or the hardship you went through when others do not.

You’re not alone.

With this in mind, it’s cheesy I know, but there’s no “I” in team. No “I” in sports either, actually. Even if you play golf, a solo sport, there are managers and coaches and many other people who make your sport happen, right? The same thing applies to team sports; working together is always better than struggling alone.

These friends can be with you not just during the time where you’re playing that sport, but even after.

Friends are friends. If they’re good they’ll stick by you. Who knows, maybe one day you and your ninety-years old girlfriend will be sitting on the front porch of an old folk's home chatting about ‘the old days’ as the star midfielders of your small town’s soccer team.

This is really why team sports are advantageous. Not for money or success or beach-ready bodies, but for the long-lasting friendships that come out of it every single day. By Chloe Morris -Student at Beaconsfield High School.
